The Connecticut Airport Authority (CAA) is accepting applications for an Airport Grounds Maintenance/CDL Driver (Transportation Maintainer 2) at Bradley International Airport (BDL) in Windsor Locks, CT. This full-time position is Monday through Friday, from 6:30 am – 3:00 pm.
As an Airport Maintainer, you’ll take a hands on, high impact role that keeps our airfield safe, efficient, and ready in every season. Your work will span a variety of outdoor and equipment based tasks—from landscaping and mowing to asphalt and concrete repair, pavement line striping, and the all important runway snow removal that keeps flights on schedule when winter hits.

Position Requirements
To step into this position, you’ll need a valid CDL (Class A or B) with Air Brake endorsement and a current Medical Examiner’s Certificate (MEC) at the time of application. Both must remain active throughout your employment with the CAA. Please be sure to indicate your CDL license number, class, expiration date and issuing state in the "Licenses and Professional Certificates" section of your application.
There is a one-hour response time when called into work.
To support the safety of the traveling public, various storm events will require employees to be at work prior, during and after a storm or weather event, which at times could be up to period of several days, and include holidays and weekends.
Airport safety and security are a priority. As essential employees, individuals in these positions must be willing to accept assignment to emergency duties including snow and ice removal and glycol recovery whenever those services are needed. The airport is staffed 7 days a week. Overtime work is required on nights, holidays and weekends. There is mandatory winter overtime from November 1st through April 30th.
An individual serving in this position must be able to successfully undergo a thorough background and security screening, physical examination including pre-employment drug screening, fingerprinting and maintain required security clearance during the duration of employment.
Incumbents in this class must obtain Bradley movement area certification, allowing them to independently operate vehicles and equipment on Airfield movement areas while effectively communicating with Air Traffic Control for proper clearance. Movement area certification must be maintained during the duration of employment.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK) In the Department of Transportation and the Connecticut Airport Authority this class is accountable for performing a variety of moderately skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of state roadsides, roadways, bridges, airports, and other departmental facilities; operates and maintains complex mechanical equipment; works as a moderately skilled mechanic in garages in the routine repair of mechanical equipment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of
the construction, maintenance, and repair techniques of roadsides, roadways, bridges, or airports;
the processes and materials used in the construction and maintenance trades;
Skills
interpersonal skills;
oral and written communication skills;
Ability to
use and make routine repairs to complex mechanical equipment;
operate equipment as listed on the attached addendum;
understand and follow written and oral instructions;
utilize computer software.
Minimum Qualifications - General Experience One (1) year of experience in the construction, landscaping, commercial driving, snow plowing, maintenance and repair of roadsides, roadways, bridges or airports, in work involving the operation and care of mechanical equipment or work in one of the recognized maintenance trades.

Minimum Qualifications - Substitutions Allowed
Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma designating completion of the subject requirements in one of the maintenance trades may be substituted for the General Experience.
Successful completion of the Transportation Maintenance Registered Apprenticeship Program approved by the Department of Administrative Services may be substituted for the General Experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience working within an airport environment;
Mechanical skills;
1-2 years of experience operating various types of heavy equipment;
1-2 years of snow removal experience;
Experience with radio monitoring and communications.

Special Requirements
Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.
Incumbents in this class must be willing to accept assignment to emergency duties, including snow and ice removal, whenever their services are required.

Character Requirements At state airports: In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for appointment.

Physical Requirements
Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness in order to perform the duties of the class.
A physical examination will be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents in this class are exposed to extremes of weather conditions, to frequent lifting of heavy weights, to highly dangerous road and traffic conditions, including exposure to heights when working on bridges, to poison ivy, insect bites and allergy irritants during summer months, and to loud and potentially dangerous machinery.
The appointing authority may require completion of an asbestos removal program consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment in this class. Incumbents may be required to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
