  • Instructional Council (IC): Biology
  • The following disciplines meet the requirements to teach in this field:
  • Biology (biological sciences, life sciences, BIO) is a basic research lab science discipline such as cell biology, molecular biology, physiology, anatomy, microbiology, marine biology, zoology, botany, ecology, developmental, evolutionary, neurobiology, and other disciplines or subfields approved by the Biology Instructional Council.
  • Applied biology includes public health (epidemiology, nutrition, environmental health, biostatistics), bioengineering, biotechnology, environmental science, conservation biology, wildlife management, exercise physiology, pathology, nutrition science, and other applied biology disciplines or subfields approved by the Biology Instructional Council.
  • Requires transcript evaluation by the hiring committee.

  • Demonstrated teaching experience, preferably at the community college level, utilizing a variety of delivery formats including in-person, online, live online, hybrid, and short-term/accelerated courses.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching lab and lecture in Human Anatomy and Physiology I and II (BIO 201 and BIO 202) or equivalent courses at the college level, preferably within the last five (5) years.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of, and experience with the use of human remains, dissection specimens, and cadavers, especially when teaching Native American student groups.
  • Demonstrated experience developing college-level course curriculum and assessments following best practices, preferably in anatomy and physiology.
  • Demonstrated experience using technology and/or Open Educational Resources (OER) to engage students, in in-person and online settings.
  • One year of full-time, relevant MCCCD experience within the previous two years.
Preferred Skills
  • PhD or M.S., or equivalent, degree in biological sciences and 12 credit hours in upper division coursework relevant to the teaching of anatomy and physiology.

  • (Not required) – Master’s degree or higher in medicine or health care including graduate or professional degrees such as MD, DO, DDS/DMD, DPM, DVM, PA, DPT, DC, ND, MBChB or MBBS, and other health care-related disciplines approved by the Biology Instructional Council.
  • (Not required) – Requires transcript evaluation by the hiring committee.
  • (Not required) – Master’s degree or higher in biology education, science education or secondary education with 18 semester graduate credits in biology and/or applied biology courses (see criteria A and B).
  • (Required) – The required 18 credits of graduate coursework may include up to 6 semester hours of science teaching methods courses.
  • (Not required) – PhD or M.S., or equivalent, degree in biological sciences and 12 credit hours in upper division coursework relevant to the teaching of anatomy and physiology.
  • (Not required) – A degree would include research at the molecular, cellular, or organismal level.
  • (Not required) – Demonstrated teaching experience, preferably at the community college level, utilizing a variety of delivery formats including in-person, online, live online, hybrid, and short-term/accelerated courses.
